Literature after Mavro Vetranović and Marin Držić

Croatian literature in Dubrovnik immediately after the death of Marin Držić in 1567 and of Mavro Vetranović in 1576 went through a period of rather uninspired consolidation, though not, it must be said, of sterility. The already-mentioned mathematician, Nikola Nalješković, is perhaps more notable for the cultivated circle around him than for his own creative literary achievements. Yet nor were the latter negligible, for Nalješković wrote seven plays and a quantity of Petrarchan poetry. Nalješković was also a scientist and astronomer.73

Nalješković’s contemporary Antun Bratosaljić Sasin (1520–1594) is best known for an enthusiastic – even far-fetched – evocation of the prowess of the Ragusan navy in his poem Mrnarica (‘Navy’).74 The poet portrays the ruler of Messina standing at his window, seeking to know whose is the great fleet he sees before him. His servants hurry to reassure him that the ships are not those of hostile Moors or Turks but rather of friendly Dubrovnik. And they add:
